Seismic Safety Evaluation and Upgrade, Aviemore Hydro Dam- Waitaki Valley, New Zealand
The Aviemore Dam is one of Meridian Energy’s major damns in the South Island. We were commissioned to carry out a seismic safety evaluation as the dam straddles an active fault. The structure has to be assessed for both shaking loads and potential fault movement. This included looking at the effects of the fault displacement on the dam, as well as the effects of seiche waves that could result from the displacement of large areas of the reservoir floor.
Our Project team developed a three-dimensional finite difference method based on the geometry of the embankment and the foundation geology, to analyse the structural response of the dam.
